History of the Panos Family
The Carnarvon Hotel is synonym with the Panos family, as it has been in the Panos family for 4 generations.
The great grandfather, Nicholas Anthony Panos was born in Greece on the 21st of July 1882 and he arrived in South Africa approximately in 1900. For some time he went around in the district in the company of a Jew, selling merchandise to farmers. Next he started a butchery in Carnarvon and by 1929 he was the owner of the Premier Hotel and the Premier Bioscope. When precisely he bought the Carnarvon Hotel is not known.
His wife, known to the family as "Ouma Doll, was the daughter of Richard Mecer Dawson and Margaretha (Born Lottriet. Her father D.J.F.Lotriet owned the first motor in Carnarvon). Richard Dawson was a builder and built many of the houses in Carnarvon.
Richard in turn was the son of William Dawson who arrived in South Africa in 1860 as a captain in the Irish Cavalry. After he left the army he came to Carnarvon and married Alice Holmes. He was appointed as "Vrederegter" for Schietfontein, Carnarvon and Victoria West.
