The Carnarvon Heritage Foundation

Carnarvon is a small village in the Karoo with an interesting history, that tells the story of different cultures that were thrown into a melting pot of hardship, sorrow and joy to give birth to a village that is now on its way to a prosperous future, where all cultures can live together as citizens of Carnarvon.

On the initiative of Heinrich Jansen, a group of inhabitants came together with the common goal of improving the image of Carnarvon, not only through the eyes of visitors, but in the perspective of the people of Carnarvon itself.

As part of this process the group will strive to restore and preserve the unique historic buildings, while also improving other esthetic aspects such as the neatness and beautification of our town.

The eventual goal of the members of the Carnarvon Heritage Foundation is to improve the quality of life of the inhabitants by creating opportunities for jobs and entrepreneurship.  In the process of reaching this goal, other aspects such as the perceptions of personal responsibility for neatness need to be changed.   Inhabitants must become proud of our town and be willing to contribute in one way or another to the improvement of conditions in Carnarvon.

It will be important that not only the long term needs of the many jobless and poor people must get attention, but that in collaboration with government, businesses and NGO’s, means must be found to address the immediate needs of this large group of people in our town.
