The Launch of the Karoo Highlands Route

Saturday 2nd of October 2010

Open Africa is a non governmental organization that promotes tourism in Southern African countries and has helped to develop more than 50 tourism routes in co-operation with local governments and representatives of tourism committees of the towns on the routes.   On their website http://www.openafrica.org every organization, person or business involved in tourism, can advertise for free.   Have a look at our own route, the "Karoo Highlands Route" on their website and if you are involved in tourism in any way, make sure that your details get onto their site.

On Saturday the 2nd of October 2010 the route was officially launched in the big hall at the Carnarvon showgrounds and the section on their website advertising the Karoo Highlands Route was introduced to the public and participants.  Most of the towns on the route had an exhibition to advertise the tourism potential and  tourism activities in their towns.   Carnarvons exhibition was done by Marie Jacobs.   A potjiekos competition was organized between the different towns and the Carnarvon potjie cooked by Marie and Pieter won, with the potjie from Sutherland in the second place.  Enjoy the photos below.

Spar Christmas Tree Project

As part of a community outreach project, Spar Carnarvon  has put up a large Christmas tree with the names of 150 children on it.   Members of the public were invited to take a name from the tree and buy a Christmas present for a child.   The age and gender of the children were on the cards.     The children receiving the gifts are all part of the "Keep Carnarvon Clean Campaign"    Visit the Projects page for more information about this project,

Response from the public were overwhelming and on Saturday the 18th of December Father Christmas came specially to hand over the presents to 150 children.  The photos below tell it all.

This is a small way of saying Thank you for a wonderful job.
